The theme of cosiness can course through the various spaces without it meaning that all the rooms must have the same colours and mood. You can even play with the floor materials, using various species of wood for different rooms. Nothing kills off a sense of cosiness or comfort more efficiently than serially implemented and repetitive use of material. If your kitchen floor is made from walnut, a dark mahogany table and steel touches in the chairs will provide glorious contrasts.
A homey touch also lives in the details. Textiles, pillows, rugs, curtains and table cloths will enliven even the most neutral of rooms. If you have not yet found your own taste, it is best to start from a neutral basis in decor: large surfaces such as floors can be selected on the grounds of their adaptability and maintainability. You should do this particularly when selecting hardwood floor materials, and ask yourself how much wear the floor will be subjected to as well as how carefully it can be maintained.
